My mother says I can build a new home from clouds & I believe her (2021-present)

In this series-in-progress, I am interested in exploring Black women’s relationships to the natural world. So far, the series includes self-portraits, still lifes, and nature photographs that are all in color. My exploration is partly informed by Black spiritual practices, Black cultural traditions, as well as the literature and scholarly writing of Black women poets, novelists, and scholars who are living and those who are ancestors. Additionally, the title of the series is pulled from lines from one of my own published poems, and some of the photographs are named using lines from the poetry and fiction of Black women writers who are ancestors and those who are living.
